Oroklini, which you will also see written as Voroklini on road signs and maps, sits on the curve of Larnaca Bay, about ten minutes from Larnaca town and fifteen from the airport. The beach here is long, shallow and calm, which makes it one of the easiest swims on the island, especially for families with small children. It is also, and we say this with some bias but plenty of evidence, a very good place to be hungry.
The beach itself
The water stays waist deep for a long way out and the seabed is mostly sand, with the odd patch of pebble near the breakwaters. Mornings are the quietest time. By early afternoon in summer the loungers fill up, so if you like your swim with some peace, come before ten. Loungers and umbrellas rent for a few euro, lifeguards are on duty through the season, and the shallow water warms up fast, which children love and adults pretend not to.
The sea is properly warm from June to October. May and November are for the committed, though you will see local swimmers out there in January acting like it is nothing. October might be the best month of all. Warm water, soft light, no crowds, and the restaurants still in full swing.
The seafront walk
A flat promenade runs along the coast and you can walk a long stretch of Larnaca Bay with the water beside you the whole way. The bay faces east, so sunrise walks here are genuinely special. Bring a coffee, walk until the hotels thin out, and turn back when you get hungry. In the evening the same walk works in reverse, ending at a dinner table instead of breakfast. Runners use it early, families with prams take it over around six, and nobody is in a hurry at any hour.
Where to eat on the water
This is the part we know best, because we live it every day. Mer Bleue is a family run beach restaurant right on the Oroklini seafront, and our tables at the edge of the terrace sit a few steps from the sea. The kitchen runs from morning coffee through to dinner, with fresh fish coming in daily, Mediterranean grills, salads and pasta, and a fish meze for tables that want the full experience.
Lunch after a swim is the classic move. You can walk in from the beach as you are, sit in the shade, and take your time over grilled calamari and a cold beer. For dinner, especially in July and August, it is worth booking a table so you can catch the light changing over the bay. If you want to know what to order, our guides to fresh fish in Larnaca and fish meze cover it properly.
Making a day of it
A reasonable Oroklini day, tested many times: swim early while the water is glass, coffee on the promenade, a slow lunch by the sea, a nap you did not plan, another swim around five when the heat breaks, then a walk along the bay before dinner. If you have a car, the salt lake and its flamingos in winter, the old town of Larnaca and the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque are all within twenty minutes. But plenty of people come for a week and never leave the beach, and we understand them completely.
What to bring and what to know
The practical list is short. Sunscreen, a hat, water, and cash for the loungers, though most places take cards now. The sun here is stronger than it feels because of the sea breeze, and the hour after midday is for shade, not heroics. Water shoes are unnecessary on this beach, the sand is kind. Wind is rare and the bay is protected, so flat calm mornings are the norm rather than the exception.
Out of season the beach changes character completely and we like it just as much. From November to March you get the whole stretch to yourself, the light is low and gold all day, and a walk here in a jumper followed by a long lunch indoors watching the water is one of the underrated pleasures of Cyprus in winter. The restaurants on the strip stay open year round, ours included.
